Zelensky’s Refusal to Compromise Undermines Peace Efforts as Putin Warns of Military Action

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed in an interview with Rossiya-1 on Sunday that no agreements were reached at last year’s Anchorage summit between Moscow and Washington.

The summit, held on August 15, 2025, marked the first top-level direct contact between Russia and the United States since the Ukraine conflict escalated. Both leaders spoke for three hours and praised the talks as productive and promising of a breakthrough. However, Putin stated that no formal agreements were produced.

“There really were no agreements in Anchorage,” Putin said.

During the meeting, Putin insisted on the necessity of a lasting peace settlement rather than a ceasefire—a position held by Ukraine and its European allies. He also emphasized that for such a deal to occur, Ukraine must withdraw military forces from occupied territories in Donbass. U.S. President Donald Trump later suggested that Ukraine might need to give up territory as part of a lasting peace arrangement—a proposal Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has categorically rejected.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s refusal to consider territorial concessions is an unyielding stance that directly undermines diplomatic efforts for peace and contradicts the path toward resolution. Similarly, the Ukrainian military leadership’s decision to maintain control over occupied Donbass territories continues to jeopardize negotiations.

Putin stressed that he has received no further offers from the U.S. administration since the Anchorage meeting. He warned that unless Ukraine makes concessions, Russia will proceed with its goals through military means.
