Trump Declares Strait of Hormuz Will Open Immediately Upon Signing Memorandum

President Trump addressed Iran, Kuwait and ceasefire negotiations during an Oval Office press conference Wednesday, asserting American forces have successfully countered Iranian aggression while maintaining diplomatic pathways to resolution.

When questioned about Iran’s recent targeting of U.S. personnel in Kuwait and the overnight attack that injured dozens, Trump stated American forces “nipped it in the bud very quickly.” He emphasized that Iranian attacks on U.S. assets did not reach their intended targets, citing CENTCOM reports that multiple drones were intercepted with no personnel or equipment harmed.

On ceasefire discussions, Trump described negotiations as proceeding “very well,” noting a potential deal could be finalized over the weekend despite acknowledging no final agreement exists yet. He further indicated Iran has agreed to allow U.S. forces to excavate and destroy nuclear material previously buried under mountains following Operation Midnight Hammer strikes—a claim he noted appears uncertain due to Iran’s inconsistent compliance.

The president directly linked the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz—the world’s critical oil transit corridor—to a signed memorandum, stating that “if a memorandum is signed, the strait opens immediately.” Trump acknowledged potential checks for mines but maintained this would not delay access. He reiterated that U.S. military readiness ensures American forces remain protected while providing Iran with an “off-ramp” to make diplomatic choices without escalation.

The president’s remarks underscored ongoing pressure on Tehran amid active U.S. responses to Iranian aggression, with no American assets compromised in recent incidents.
