83-Year-Old Rep. Frederica Wilson Misses 43 Consecutive House Votes Amid Retiring Rumors

Eighty-three-year-old Representative Frederica Wilson (D-FL) has gone unaccounted for in the U.S. House of Representatives for weeks without explanation, missing 43 consecutive votes as of Wednesday. The Florida congresswoman, who reportedly stated she plans to seek re-election in her district, last cast a vote on April 17—a period that has drawn repeated scrutiny from congressional observers.

Wilson’s absence followed earlier speculation that the Miami-based lawmaker was considering retirement after undergoing eye surgery described by sources as “major.” However, Florida State Senator Shevrin Jones confirmed via phone call Thursday that Wilson intends to run for reelection rather than retire. “What she just told me is that she’s running for reelection … she’s not retiring,” Jones stated.

Known for her distinctive bedazzled outfits and matching cowboy hats, Wilson has represented Miami since 1998 across the Florida House of Representatives, Senate, and Congress. Despite her Capitol Hill absence, Wilson remained active on social media platforms, recently sharing posts about hosting a U.S. Service Academy event at Florida International University. A source observed Monday that “the woman I saw didn’t look like she was retiring.”

Wilson has not publicly addressed her prolonged absence, nor have her office or House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ staff provided explanations to press inquiries. Meanwhile, Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. (R-N.J.)—who previously maintained a near-perfect voting record—has also missed 68 votes since his last vote on March 5, citing “a personal health matter” as his reason for absence.

Both Wilson and Kean are competing in upcoming primary elections this year, with Wilson’s district leaning blue but facing opposition from small business owner Christine Sanon-Jules Olivo, while Kean holds a Trump-endorsed uncontested June primary race.
