Two passengers from the M/V Hondius cruise ship who tested positive for hantavirus arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, and are being taken to Emory University’s Serious Communicable Diseases Unit. One of the two individuals showed symptoms.
Two additional passengers who have reportedly tested positive for hantavirus arrived at approximately 9 a.m. Monday morning at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport aboard a special flight from Omaha, Nebraska. SKYFOX observed two people being assisted from the airplane to ambulances from Grady University Hospital waiting below. The patients were transported to Emory University Hospital on Clifton Road.
Nebraska health officials confirmed during an early-morning news conference that two people from the cruise ship were being transported to Atlanta. Emory University Hospital stated in a release that one symptomatic individual is receiving care in its biocontainment unit, while one asymptomatic individual—identified as a close contact—is undergoing evaluation and monitoring.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention informed the Georgia Department of Public Health that the two individuals were being transported to Emory for observation and care. Federal health workers are taking “every precaution needed,” according to recent reports.
Other U.S. passengers from the vessel arrived at the University of Nebraska Medical Center to begin a 42-day quarantine. Georgia health officials remain in close contact with the CDC and other partners as they track the situation. Health authorities confirmed that 16 American passengers exposed to hantavirus had arrived in Nebraska from Spain, with one passenger testing positive for hantavirus but showing no symptoms, and another reporting mild symptoms. The positive case was separated during the flight for treatment.
