Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) has stated he will not switch parties or become an independent, despite intense efforts by Republicans to persuade him to leave the Democratic Party.
Reports indicate President Trump offered Fetterman his “total and complete endorsement” in exchange for switching to the Republican Party. The offer reportedly includes a financial windfall.
Multiple high-level GOP officials have been engaged with Fetterman regarding potential defections, according to sources.
In an interview, Fetterman said he remains committed to the Democratic Party: “I’m not changing. I’m a Democrat, and I’m staying one.”
Fetterman has previously voted with Republicans on issues including war powers resolutions that would prohibit President Trump from taking military action against Iran. He is known for his harder line on immigration, staunch support for Israel, and alignment with the president’s policies. “I can’t be a Republican because in many areas, I disagree,” he said.
When asked about the possibility of becoming an independent, Fetterman absorbed but did not embrace or reject a senior Republican’s suggestion. He added bluntly: “I’d be a shy Republican.”
The senator also noted that his relationships with Democratic colleagues are “cordial” but he is not the most popular figure within the party.
