Ford Recalls Nearly 1.4 Million F-150 Pickup Trucks Over Critical Gearshift Safety Hazard

Ford Motor Company has issued a recall for nearly 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks due to a gearshift issue that increases the likelihood of a crash. The automaker is aware of two injuries and one accident potentially linked to this problem, as reported by ABC News.

The recall covers F-150 light trucks with a six-speed automatic transmission produced between March 12, 2014, and August 18, 2017. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), some vehicles may experience an intermittent signal from the transmission range sensor to the powertrain control module. This could result in a temporary, unintended downshift into second gear, causing an abrupt reduction in wheel speed for a brief period. In certain situations, this might lead rear tires sliding until vehicle speed slows.

Ford has documented 444 warranty claims and 105 customer service reports related to the issue as of early this month. An NHTSA notice states dealers will update the powertrain control module software at no cost. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are scheduled for mailing on April 27, 2026, with additional letters following once the final remedy is available, expected by July 2026.

The recall report also notes that some vehicle owners may observe an illuminated malfunction indicator light or wrench light on their dashboard if transmission range sensor issues occur.
