Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger, who won Virginia’s gubernatorial race by a margin of 15 points in November, now has an approval rating of 47 percent — down from 57 percent within five months.
This represents the lowest approval level among Virginia governors at this stage in their terms since polling began in the early 1990s. Her current rating trails former Governor Glenn Youngkin’s 54 percent, Democratic Governor Ralph Northam’s 48 percent, and former Governor Terry McAuliffe’s 52 percent.
Republicans have run advertisements linking Spanberger to proposed taxes on dry cleaning, gym memberships, and pet care. The governor’s office stated that these tax bills were never passed by the General Assembly and did not reach her desk, but voters have already seen a sharp decline in approval ratings.
The rapid decline follows her initial victory as a pragmatic moderate who was widely expected to model Democratic success in competitive races.
