NFL Star Rondale Moore Found Dead in Indiana Garage with Suspected Self-Inflicted Gunshot

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Rondale Moore was found dead on Saturday in southern Indiana. New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey stated that Moore was discovered in a garage with a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Moore, selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, scored his first career touchdown in his second game on a 77-yard pass from Kyler Murray. The former Purdue Boilermaker standout finished his rookie season with 54 receptions for 435 yards and 1 touchdown.

Moore later spent time with the Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings, dealing with numerous injuries during his career. Born in New Albany, Indiana, Moore attended New Albany High School and won a state basketball championship in 2016. He transferred to Trinity High School in Louisville where he won a state football title in 2017.

Moore played at Purdue for current Louisville coach Jeff Brohm. As a freshman in 2018, Moore had 114 catches for 1,258 yards and 12 touchdowns, and was named a first-team All-American. Brohm released the following statement: “Rondale Moore was a complete joy to coach. The ultimate competitor who wouldn’t back down from any challenge. Rondale had a work ethic unmatched by anyone. A great teammate that would come through in any situation. We all loved Rondale; we loved his smile and his competitive edge that always wanted to please everyone he came in contact with. We offer all our thoughts and prayers to Rondale and his family. We love him very much.”

Moore received several prominent accolades after his sensational freshman season, including being named a First-Team All-American by the Associated Press and the Football Writers Association of America on December 10–12, 2018. He led the Boilermakers in a shocking 49-20 upset against the undefeated 2 Ohio State Buckeyes in 2018, scoring a 32-yard receiving touchdown and a 76-yard rushing touchdown in his first quarter of college action, finishing with 313 all-purpose yards—a program record.

Moore went on to post 2,048 all-purpose yards in 2018, earning consensus All-American honors, the Paul Hornung Award for college football’s most versatile player, the Paul Warfield Trophy for the nation’s top wide receiver, the Big Ten Receiver of the Year award and the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award. Injuries marred the rest of his college career, as he played a combined seven games in his sophomore and junior year.

The Arizona Cardinals drafted Moore in the second round (49th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft. He stayed with Arizona for three seasons before being traded to the Atlanta Falcons, where he posted 1,201 career receiving yards. Moore never played another game after missing the entire 2024 season with a knee injury. He joined the Vikings on a one-year contract but suffered another season-ending knee injury in preseason.
