Alex Honnold, one of the world’s most famous climbers, has completed an unprecedented feat by free soloing the Taipei 101 skyscraper in Taiwan. The 1,667-foot structure—located in Taipei’s Xinyi District and featuring 101 above-ground floors—is among the most iconic buildings globally.
Honnold ascended the tower without any safety equipment or assistance, performing the climb entirely from the outside with no ropes, harnesses, or other gear. The challenge took place against strong winds and the building’s natural sway, a feat that has left many in awe.
Taipei 101, which stood as the world’s tallest building from 2004 to 2010, includes an advanced tuned mass damper—a giant golden sphere suspended between floors 88 and 92—to counteract wind forces. The tower is also known for its LEED Platinum sustainability certification and ultra-fast elevators.
Honnold described his payment for the climb as “shockingly low,” noting that it fell far short of professional athletes’ earnings despite the immense risk involved. He emphasized that he would have undertaken the challenge without financial incentive if given permission from the building’s management.
