Schizophrenia Diagnosis and Erratic Behavior Linked to Fatal Home Murder of Parents

Nick Reiner was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and medications he was taking left him described as “erratic,” “dangerous,” and “out of his head” according to a report. Sources cited by the outlet indicated Reiner received mental health care in the weeks preceding his parents’ deaths.

In the month before the murders, Reiner’s behavior became “alarming.” He had recently completed treatment at a Los Angeles-based rehabilitation facility specializing in mental illness and substance abuse, which charges $70,000 per month. Sources stated that 3 to 4 weeks prior to the killings, doctors adjusted his medications without success, worsening his condition. One source reported Reiner became “out of his head” following the medication change, with substance abuse exacerbating his schizophrenia.

Reiner’s sister Romy, who discovered her parents’ bodies, told investigators that her brother “should be a suspect” due to being “dangerous.” Insiders described him as a “ticking time bomb,” noting his behavior deteriorated significantly after his parents threatened to remove him from their home. The troubled 32-year-old had lived in his parents’ guesthouse for five years, where his increasingly erratic conduct became frightening.

Following the murders, Reiner was reportedly brought to a star-studded holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien due to concerns about his mental state. Guests observed “antisocial behavior” including staring and loud arguments with attendees, such as comedian Bill Hader. Rob and Michele were found dead with their throats slit in their $13.5 million California mansion on Sunday.
