The results of the New Jersey governor race have been finalized, marking another Democratic triumph in a closely watched contest. Democrat Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli to become the state’s 57th governor, according to projections from Decision Desk HQ.
With 84% of votes counted, Sherrill secured 56% of the vote compared to Ciattarelli’s 43%. The race was called in her favor after a competitive campaign. Sherrill, a fourth-term congresswoman representing northern New Jersey, overcame a persistent challenge from Ciattarelli, who sought his third gubernatorial bid following a narrow loss to then-Governor Phil Murphy in 2021. Murphy, term-limited, was ineligible to run again.
Sherrill expressed gratitude for the victory on X, stating: “New Jersey, it is the honor of my life to earn your trust to become this great state’s 57th Governor. I promise to listen, lead with courage, and never forget who I serve.”
The outcome adds to a broader trend of Democratic successes in the 2025 election cycle, with multiple states leaning blue.
