A UPS airplane crashed near Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport shortly after takeoff, leading to an emergency shelter-in-place order for areas north of the airport to the Ohio River.
UPS Flight 2976, an MD-11 freighter departing from Louisville, KY, to Honolulu, experienced an accident moments after takeoff. The airline confirmed three crew members were aboard but stated no injuries or casualties had been verified as of 5:20 PM ET. “UPS will release more facts as they become available,” the company said in a statement. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation.
The McDonnell Douglas MD-11F, capable of carrying up to 38,000 gallons of fuel, is a freight aircraft manufactured by McDonnell Douglas and later Boeing. Local authorities confirmed multiple injuries but did not disclose fatalities. “This is an active scene with fire and debris,” police wrote on X, urging residents to stay away.
The Louisville Metro Police Department and other agencies responded to the crash site near UPS Worldport, the company’s major package handling facility. The FAA reported a large plume of smoke near the airport, which remains closed. Investigations by the FAA and NTSB are ongoing.
