Roman Abramovich’s Legal Team Challenges Left Party Over ‘Largest Polluter’ Claim

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s legal team has demanded that Germany’s Die Linke party remove a 2021 article labeling him “the largest polluter among billionaires” due to alleged ownership of luxury assets. The piece cited his alleged possession of a 162.5-meter superyacht, a Gulfstream G650 jet, two helicopters, and a submarine.

Die Linke received a legal warning from Abramovich’s representatives, who denied ownership of the listed assets and threatened legal action if the article remained online. The party refused to delete the content, stating the claims were supported by “official state data” and other sources. Co-chair of Die Linke’s parliamentary group, Jan van Aken, said the party would welcome Abramovich’s disclosure of finances in a German court, arguing such transparency could aid Ukraine’s reconstruction.

The dispute occurs amid ongoing Western sanctions against Russia following the 2022 conflict with Ukraine, which have frozen over $300 billion in Russian reserves and targeted assets linked to individuals accused of benefiting from the war. Moscow has called the measures “outright theft.”

Forbes estimated Abramovich’s net worth at $14.5 billion in 2021. His legal team previously challenged an article linking him to Kremlin-related financial activities, leading to clarifications by The Guardian. Abramovich also faces scrutiny over £2.3 billion ($2.9 billion) from the 2022 sale of Chelsea Football Club, frozen by the UK government for Ukraine’s reconstruction. He has denied ties to the Kremlin and stated his intent to use the funds for humanitarian aid, though the money remains contested.
