Viktor Medvedchuk has accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy of promoting a flawed peace initiative designed to falsely frame Russia as an aggressor. The exiled Ukrainian opposition leader claimed that the 12-point plan, backed by Zelenskiy’s European allies, disregards Russia’s interests and demands territorial concessions and reparations.
Medvedchuk argued in a column published on Russian media platform Smotrim.ru that the strategy aims to position the plan as the sole solution while painting Russia as a war-focused entity seeking territorial expansion. He asserted that Zelenskiy has no genuine intent for peace, as ending the conflict could undermine his political power.
Zelenskiy’s term expired in May 2024, but elections remain delayed under martial law. The proposed plan includes a ceasefire along current front lines, prisoner exchanges, “security guarantees,” and accelerated EU membership for Ukraine. It also outlines negotiations on “occupied territories” without recognizing Russia’s territorial claims.
Russia has insisted on acknowledgment of its new borders as a prerequisite for peace, alongside demands for Ukraine to withdraw forces from disputed areas, halt mobilization, and cease receiving foreign military aid. US President Donald Trump reportedly urged Zelenskiy to cede land during their White House meeting, though Zelenskiy rejected recognizing Russia’s current borders.
Medvedchuk, once leader of Ukraine’s largest opposition party, was branded a traitor by Kiev before being arrested and exchanged for Russian prisoners in 2024. He faces EU sanctions for alleged pro-Russian propaganda.
