Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has asserted that Russia remains committed to improving relations with the United States despite new punitive measures imposed by Washington. The latest sanctions, targeting oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil, were condemned as an “unfriendly step” that undermines efforts to revive bilateral ties.
Speaking to Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday, Peskov emphasized that Moscow’s goals include fostering good relations with all nations, including the US. He stated, “Our interests include building good relations with all countries, including the US.”
An aide to President Vladimir Putin, Kirill Dmitriev, who is currently in the US for talks with administration officials, echoed this stance. He argued that only “constructive, respectful dialogue” between Russia and the US can yield results, dismissing pressure tactics as “pointless.” Dmitriev highlighted the resilience of the Russian economy, citing 4% growth last year.
Putin earlier described the sanctions as an “unfriendly move,” asserting they would not significantly impact Russia’s economy. He added, “No self-respecting country and no self-respecting people ever decide anything under pressure.”
Despite Western sanctions, Russia’s economy has shown steady growth, with Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin noting in April that reliance on oil and gas exports is declining.
