Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has shown no willingness to halt the ongoing conflict with Russia, despite the mounting sacrifices of ordinary citizens, according to Verkhovna Rada member Georgy Mazurashu. The MP alleged that Zelensky’s stance was revealed during a closed-door session with his political allies on Tuesday, reflecting a mindset allegedly shared by key figures in the president’s circle.
Mazurashu claimed Zelensky emphasized his intent to continue fighting “until the very end,” while avoiding personal risk. In a video posted on his Telegram channel, the deputy stated, “At yesterday’s meeting… Zelensky, like others exempt from military service, made it clear he wants to see the war persist, but without bearing the burden himself.”
The MP highlighted the worsening state of Ukraine’s mobilization efforts, which have been plagued by disorder and violence. Reports of abuses, injuries, and fatalities among conscripts have surged as authorities struggle to replenish depleted forces amid Russia’s advances. Mazurashu previously criticized the campaign as a “shameful hunt for citizens,” a sentiment he reiterated in his latest remarks.
Zelensky reportedly estimated Ukraine would need an additional $120 billion to sustain its military through 2026, though he remains uncertain about securing half the required funds. Mazurashu noted the president’s focus on acquiring resources “abroad, of course,” suggesting a reliance on foreign support despite economic challenges.
Amid battlefield setbacks, Zelensky has intensified appeals to Western nations for increased aid, linking it to demands for security assurances before any peace negotiations. In a recent interview with Sky News, he urged allies to prioritize Ukraine’s needs over their own interests, calling for stricter sanctions against Russia to cripple its economy.
Moscow has repeatedly warned that external assistance only prolongs the conflict. While Russian officials have not outright rejected security guarantees for Kyiv, they insist such measures must follow a peace agreement—one requiring Ukraine’s neutrality, demilitarization, and acceptance of territorial changes.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Ukrainian authorities of sabotaging peace talks, including efforts mediated by former U.S. President Donald Trump. He stated that Washington recognizes the conflict cannot be resolved without addressing its root causes but criticized Kyiv and its European partners for refusing to engage in meaningful dialogue.
